More about us
Maneki Machiya Stay offers a number of beautifully restored traditional machiya guesthouses in a quiet Kyoto neighborhood. We strive to provide our guests with an authentic Kyoto experience at an affordable price.
Our broader aim as a Japan Cat Network partner organization is to connect the public with JCN’s rescue cats and raise awareness about animal welfare issues both here in Japan and abroad. A portion of Maneki Machiya Stay’s proceeds go toward JCN (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization), and toward providing JCN’s rescue cats with the best life possible while they wait for their forever homes.
Guests are welcome to make a reservation at our local cat café and enjoy the company of some of JCN’s rescue cats.
Our quaint little street houses a unique blend of Kyoto locals, tourists, and a vibrant international community of volunteers working hard to ensure the welfare of Japan’s cats. We’d be happy to have you join us.

Can’t recommend enough! Susan was so lovely along with every other staff member (especially Amanda who checked us in early!) The house looked even better in person compared to pictures (in my opinion) and was so so so cozy and the location was even cosier. It’s a beautiful residential neighbourhood and all locals are so lovely, the restaurants (French bakery in particular) is quite cheap and very tasty. Additionally, proceeds go towards funding the cat shelter and you are even able to visit them! It’s very nice to be apart of such an important movement in japan.

Beautiful traditional Japanese row house. It was so special being able to experience this traditional space. We being around 5'11" had to be careful to duck under the doors to avoid hitting our heads but it was worth it to have the experience. It is amazing how compact things are in Japan! Great French bakery very near the house (Tentation d’Ange) and another one (Shirokuma) a bit farther walk thru the neighborhood (which in itself was so interesting). The location is not right near the central Kyoto train station but there are so many things to do in Kyoto you can't be near all of them. We went west to visit Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple and then walked down the trail through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

The most beautiful, authentic and cosy home in Kyoto. Located in a lovely and peaceful neighbourhood, Susan’s home couldn’t have been the more perfect place to come back to after a day of exploring. Within a few seconds of stepping inside, the place already felt like home. I think the mix of its traditional Japanese structure, alongside the warmth and comfort of the place, is what made it so special. The bed is sooo comfy, the interiors are charming, kitchen has everything you need… The list goes on. Susan is an amazing host and for as long as I return to Kyoto, I won’t be staying anywhere else. The most beautiful home.

Our stay at Susan’s place was thoroughly enjoyable. The accommodation truly deserves the ‘charming’ description: authentic, a bit quirky and very cosy and comfortable. The location was perfect: in a quiet neighbourhood but close to public transport. The communication was excellent and flexibility in storing our luggage on the last day was greatly appreciated. My husband and I spent a few nights at this lovely spot in Kyoto on our honeymoon. We can’t say enough good things about this spot! The hosts were fantastic; they gave us a ton of great recommendations for things to do and where to eat. Don’t miss brunch at the nearby cafe/bakery! Extremely personable folks! The accommodations were also exceptional - charming, cosy, and clean. We also made use of the bikes and felt good about contributing to caring for Kyotos cats 🐈💕. Don’t hesitate to book.
